These 6 Secret Thrift Shopping Hacks Will Make You Outshine Your Favorite Fashion Influencers

Thrift and retail therapy are my coping mechanisms.

Over time, I’ve realised that thrift shopping is my favourite form of retail therapy because it helps me get unique fashion items at an affordable cost.

Last week, I watched one of my favourite TikTok fashion content creators talk about getting wardrobe essentials like a plain skirt, neutral-coloured dresses, a plain cardigan etc alongside statement pieces so you can have as many options as possible to match.

Then, I promised myself to buy more solid essentials because I’m in my fashion girlie era.

But the thing is, I have multiple fashion tastes.

Sometimes, I want to wear simple breathable dresses. Other times, I’m ready to sashay on my imaginary stage with my bodycon dresses knowing that Tiwa Savage has nothing on me.

On some days too, I want to look fashionably homeless (if you love baggy outfits, then you definitely know what I mean).

However, I’ve found out that for someone who has a broad fashion taste like me and wants to save money and promote sustainability, the best option is thrift shopping.

Over the years, thrift shopping has increased in popularity. I mean, it’s a good thing people are discovering the fun and benefits of finding secondhand fashion items.

But again, thrifting can be very overwhelming.

So here are six thrift shopping hacks that will change your life

I said what I said.

1. Use Luxim to find the best thrift deals

Withholding this information is like watching you try to survive Lagos traffic without Google Maps so I’ll help you out…

Imagine having a personal shopper guiding you through the best thrift stores, to get the most unique items at an affordable cost. That’s what Luxim can do for you.

Apart from helping you get the best deals, you can also use the app to connect with a community of fashion enthusiasts, designers and trendsetters. Who wouldn’t want that?

2. Get there early

Going early to a thrift store has been a game-changer for me. If you want to get the first pick of their new arrivals just before the crowd hits, then never hesitate to go early. Although Lagos traffic may whine you, but don’t panic. Get there early and you’d be surprised at how many unique items you’d find.

3. Build relationships with thrift vendors

You don’t have to get into a talking stage or anything but if you really want to get early access to new stock, or special deals, you may want to build a relationship with your vendor.

When I get into a thrift shop I like, I always make sure to collect the vendor’s number and make sure I check in from time to time so it’s easy for them to let me know when they have new stock.

This can give you an edge over other customers just waltzing in and out.

4. Check other sections

I got an oversized navy blue blazer and guess where I found it? In the men’s section.

I think people who overlook other sections apart from their gender are missing out on unique pieces.

Some men’s shirts can be styled as oversized tops and if you can explore the children’s section, you may discover smaller-sized items that can be worn creatively.

I’m already excited thinking of ways to style my blue blazer.

5. Explore lesser-known thrift markets

I know how tempting it is to stick to major and popular markets like Tejuosho, Katangua or Balogun market because they are known for their vast selection.

What if I told you that lesser-known markets can also be mind-blowing?

First off, you get to discover unique and fashionable items that aren’t as picked over by other shoppers.

Then, you also get to enjoy a better and more intimate shopping experience. Don’t say I didn’t do anything for you.

6. Learn to identify quality material

I can’t tell you how many times my friends have called to tell me they just noticed a particular dress they bought that looked seemingly great at first was actually terrible.

If you learn how to identify quality fabrics, it can save you from regrettable purchases and help you find pieces that last.

Feel the fabric, inspect the stitching, look out for fabric labels and check the weave to see if it is loose or tight.
